NOVEMBER 19, 2017 - 2011-12 was a spectacular season for Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. Never before - and since - have they scored so many goals in one single season.

In fact their goal scoring records of 2001-12 probably never will be beaten. Lionel Messi scored amazingly 1,263 points, but only 32 more than Cristiano Ronaldo.

Messi scored 50 goals in La Liga, and Cristiano Ronaldo 46. In the Champions League Messi scored 14 goals and Ronaldo 10. Futhermore Ronaldo scored three goals at the European Championship finals in Poland and Ukraine.

In our rankings of the highest scoring top scorers in the history of TFR, Messi's og Cristiano Ronaldo's scores of 2011-12 are in a class of their own.

No. 3 in the rankings is Luis Suárez who set his personal record in 2015-16 and since then have had his difficulties living up to the high expectations.

The three La Liga players are followed by two players from the Bundesliga, Mario Gómez and Robert Lewandowski, two other players from La Liga, Fernando Torres and Antoine Griezmann, and three legends close to retirement: David Villa, Didier Drogba and Robin van Persie.

Remarkably three of the top four players set their personal records in 2011-12, as Mario Gómez as a Bayern Munich player scored 873 points that season.
