DID YOU KNOW ?

In the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games Mascherano became the first male footballer to win a second Olympic gold medal since 1928.

His impact at youth levels was such that he made his senior international debut before playing a single minute for River Plate's first team (his central midfield position at club level was occupied by River’s long standing captain Leonardo Astrada).

He was appointed captain of the national team by new head coach Diego Maradona in November 2008 who repeatedly stated that his selection was "Mascherano and 10 more".
