Ricardo Carvalho was born in Amarante where he played for the local team, Amarante Futebol Clube. By his great performance as a youngster, he was spotted by the Portuguese powerhouse, FC Porto, and in 1996 he was brought to the club's Junior team.

It was in the 2003-04 season he made his name as a world-class footballer. He won the "UEFA Club Best Defender of the Year" award, he was voted for the "UEFA Team of the Year" and finished 9th in the "Ballon d'Or" voting.
